The Greenworks 24V Belt Sander is a medium-duty battery powered sander with a price point, I think, right in the medium field compared to high-end battery belt sanders.

It is a one-speed sander; the battery power allows to easily get rough sanding done. I sanded with the 60-grit paper a stained and polyethylene coated tabletop, ca. 36″ by 30 inch in size, with one battery load (the included 4Ah battery — I think that is a result that makes the sander a useful tool in practical applications. It did not overheat and kept the power until very close to the end.

You cannot compare this sander to high-end belt sanders which cost twice as much; I also do not want to compare it to a corded sander, because the battery feature puts a sander in a different category. I am using it for projects of that size I described and with 2 more batteries I think I will rarely pick my corded sander — a cord is always somehow in the way, you can look at it as you want to, that’s why most tools nowadays go with a battery.

It is not really a lightweight tool; it has enough weight to do the job and the handle allows a precise pressure application. Belt switching is an easy process. Adjusting the belt works well, however, I noticed that you need to make sure that the belt does not drift towards the inner front because there it will rub against the plastic of the sander and my improvement suggestion is to add a metal guard there to avoid damage to the plastic case. Otherwise, if you need a belt sander not on a daily basis and just for special projects, this one can do the job very well.
Seeing that pricing for battery tools is always higher, I still consider this sander in the medium field and in balanced with the quality.
It is a good tool and if you already have invested in other tools of the brand, it makes it easier with more batteries etc.

I agree with other reviewers that it is not as powerful compared to corded models. In addition a 2amp battery is probably not going to last more than 10 min especially for jobs requiring considerable pressure on the machine. BUT this sander is incredibly convenient. I find the handling, weight, noise levels, ease of use and the amount of power is more than adequate for the majority of my DIY projects. I am more than happy with my purchase.

The only other Greenworks item that I have is one of their robotic vacuum cleaners purchased a couple of years ago…so I’m not “in the Greenworks ecosystem” when it comes to their power tools, such as this belt sander. That made me really appreciate that a charger & 4AH battery were both included, since I don’t already have those (their vacuum has it’s own docking charging station, and doesn’t require an external battery like this tool does, nor does it charge using the same charger that this battery requires).

The sander itself is not the finest that I’ve ever used, but certainly suitable for my occasional need on smaller projects. As a bonus, I don’t have to keep borrowing my father-in-law’s any longer!

It’s pretty lightweight, even with the battery on it (although the position of the battery on the rear actually helps it maintain pretty even surface contact, while the lead hand is simply guiding it along the surface). Sandpaper is a breeze to install; just flip up the lever on the side, check the inside of the belt for the arrow direction indicators (ensuring that you’re matching it to the arrow direction that is on the tool), center it on the bottom pad with the edge of the sandpaper as close to the edge of the tool as you can, flip the lever back down to “lock” it in place, and done! A 10-15 second process, wonderful!

Unlike the one that I’d normally borrow from my father-in-law, this sander is not variable speed. But, the RPM that this tool turns the sanding pad is plenty enough for any job that I’d be using it for.

Trigger has a lock-out to keep it going without having to keep the trigger depressed the whole time, which is excellent, and the multi-angle handle is super convenient.

I sanded a door that was painted a hideous light yellow color (we thought it’d turn out better than it did…) & repainted it white — not my top choice, but happy wife / happy life. It was nice to throw the door across a couple of sawhorses and do it out on the driveway without the need for an extension cord and outlet nearby. The bag hardly got any of the dust (a little, but far less than what it should have), but being outdoors and donning a dust mask anyway, not the biggest deal (and not worth hooking a vacuum up to see if that did any better)…a leaf blower took care of clean-up afterwards. I can’t fault the dust collection bag too much, as I have yet to find a tool where this actually works even 1/2 way decently. Nothing deducted for this bag simply following what appears to be bag protocol.

The battery was still charging on the 3rd bar when I sanded the door — it wasn’t quite done charging all the way, but was somewhere in the final-bar charge cycle, and still shows 2 bars remaining after. I’ll bet it’s on the high side of the 2 bars remaining, although with only a 3-bar indicator, it’s much harder to pin-point remaining capacity in tighter ranges like a 4-bar or 5-bar indicator would offer.

Although I don’t use a sander every day or even every month (note: they recommend if not being used for prolonged periods, to charge the battery for 2 hours every 2 months…something I checked before putting away so I know how to maintain it; again, since it’s not like I have a spare on hand if I ruin this one…), I’m glad to have this cord-free belt sander available for whenever the situation arises!

    Update—-
I purchase some diablo sandpaper from a hardware store, and this sander functioned perfectly. The paper did not break, and the adjustment screw allowed me to get the belt perfectly aligned on the tool. I have changed my rating to 5*. My experience may have been a one off. My sanding belts both broke at the taped seam. The glue may have been old, or it may have gotten wet at some point. My sander showed no signs of ever being wet. Do this may have been a 3m manufacturing problem. The sander is perfect, the new sand paper is perfect. I’m pleased!

This is a well balanced sander, with decent weight to it. Its heavy enough to work hard, and feel like quality, but still manageable. It comes with a 4 ah battery, which is sufficient for projects, but you’ll need a few if you’re a heavy use pro. I’m not overall, too sure how it runs out over the long term. Mine kept popping the included sand paper. I think the paper was weak from the beginning. Mine had some discoloring as if it had, at some point been wet. Do not count on the sand paper being useful. Source your own sand paper. What came with the sander is two 50 grit belts, 18 inches long. I did take a star off for breaking sand paper belts. Ill buy some quality belts, and give it some more use. If the problem is resolved, I’ll update the review, and give it the 5 stars it otherwise deserves. But breaking stuff is not a 5 star item, at this point. It should be noted they sent 3m sanding belts, which are a quality name brand. However they were discolored, so they may not have been optimal. I said it twice, because its an important distinction.
