This is, without question, the strangest, weirdest, most unsettling movie I have ever seen!

I saw it in a theater when it first came out, and when it was over, I felt as though my brain had been plucked out of my skull, twisted into some new and strange shape, and put back in backward, or maybe sideways.

I wasn’t sure WHAT I had just watched… and I’m still not sure.

I ordered and received this movie on DVD several months ago, but I still haven’t watched it. Why not?

Because, to be honest, I’m AFRAID to watch it again! I’ve “thought” of watching it many times, and on several occasions, I’ve even started to put it into the DVD player, but every time, I found that I just… couldn’t! Every time, something within me screamed “DON’T DO IT! You DON’T want to watch this again!”

Well, how is THAT for a “scary” movie? It freaked me out the one time I saw it, and the thought of seeing it again, all these years later, STILL freaks me out!

My son loves horror movies. So he asked for this one for Christmas. It definitely is freaky to me. Definitely a good one to watch on a dark and stormy night or not.

I thought after the first few minutes this was going to be a dud. tho I was slow to notice it became a bit interesting and then, alright, I was hooked. this story had a bit more than the many similar related stories…and…the actors believed what they were doing. so did I. keep your brain awake and you’ll enjoy a scary, unbelievable, and unpredictable good time. enjoy

Now this is how you make a horror movie. One of the best ones that has come out recently.

Mirrors are a staple of many horror thrillers from the past, Bela Lugosi can’t be seen in one ( of course) in Dracula, the great British classic Dead of Night has a section on an antique mirror, there are brief but scary moments in Repulsion, American Werewolf in London, The Shining, Black Swan, and many more movies good and mediocre, so a whole film on an evil mirror that can think and avoid destruction didn’t sound too good. Oculus however is a first rate horror, ghostly and frightening rather than gruesome, I usually prefer gory movies as a rule but have to admit the former type of film is probably better when really well done, Oculus is very well executed (Director Mike Flanagan) and can be compared in statue to the other films mentioned I think. Starting off predictably Oculus gets better as it goes on acquiring depth as past and younger versions of characters mix skilfully and intriguingly with the present, a film to reflect on (sorry) later. The cast is fine all round, a forceful performance from Karen Gillan (the first time I’ve seen her in a movie) and surprisingly a thoughtful appearance from Annalise Basso as Kaylie’s (Gillen) younger self. From an unpromising premise to an unusual film. MPC.
