This unit works great for running vent fans to cool off a shop or small house by running the vents only when it is cooler outside than it is inside. Will also work for solar water heating systems, but note there is no high limit setting, so in a hot climate you might have problems getting your solar water tank too hot.

I have a home made 12′ x 8′ solar hot water panel which has been run by a timer for years . it is set to turn on for 15 minutes every hour from 12:00 to 6;00 pm in the summer and from 12;00 to 4;00pm in winter. can hit 180 degrees in summer and usually 120 degrees in winter. but cloudy and rainy days leave me cold, on rainy days when the pump turns on down comes cold water into my 80 gal. storage tank, unless I pull the plug on the circulating pump. But with this device the pump only turns on when the solar panel water is hotter than the water in the 80 gal. storage tank. For $40.00 and about 2 hrs. of my time for the complete hook including programing the device , my hot water problems have been solved. It works as advertised, has good instructions, and was easy to program. Love this little controller.

I am using this to control my solar pool heaters. The programming took a little time for me to understand well, but it’s easy now. It took heating my pool to 110° a few times before I figured out how it worked and that I needed to add a normally open relay to make it work for my application. I had to put about a 30 foot extension on the temp probe going to the heaters, but easily recalibrated it with the controller.
The unit is small and compact, buttons are a little small for my fingers but make solid contact. wire connectors are strong and secure. overall a nice little unit, I would definitely buy it again.
p.s. Don’t mind the wire colors in the picture, this was taken while I was trying to figure out why my pool was so hot and things got moved around.

I purchased this differential controller for my 30 year-old solar domestic hot water heating system. I replaced a defective Goldline GL-30 controller.
This new controller has been operational for 3 months now, and is functioning properly.
But I do want to mention a few important points.
This is an odd little unit. It is not a user-friendly replacement for standard wall-mounted solar controllers. It is not UL listed. It is not designed to be easily wall-mountable. You will have find an enclosure to make it wall-mountable and to meet code. Perhaps a plastic enclosure designed for outside receptacles. Or make one out of wood.
I did a jerry-rigged installation by inserting it inside the old GL-30 through a conveniently located removable front panel, after pulling out the old motherboard. Thus I didn’t have make a new enclosure or change the external wiring.
The unit comes with a small single sheet (2-sided) of instructions. I had difficulty following them to change the LED temperature readouts from celsius to Fahrenheit, but eventually succeeded.
The default settings for the temperature differential for turning the solar loop circulator on and off are similar to the old controller’s, so I didn’t have to mess with changing them, but you can modify them if you want.
The LED display will continually display the bottom tank sensor and solar controller temperatures, cycling between them about every 10 seconds. You don’t have to press anything to see them.
When the temperature differential is triggered, switching the circulator on, the LED will display the word “working”.
If you don’t mind the trouble of finding a way to install the unit, it certainly is good value, because standard user-friendly wall-mounted solar controllers seem to cost at least 3 times more.

    I love this little controller.
Have you noticed that it is pretty cool at night in the summer, but hot in the daytime? Or, in the winter, it is hot in the attic and cold inside? This little controller solved that issue for me in my shop.
In the summer, it compares the indoor temperature against the outdoor.. if it is cooler outdoors, it turns on the attic exhaust fan, pulling cool air from outdoors and exhausting the warm ceiling air into the attic. I also have a switch so I can manually exhaust air if I’m painting or welding.
In the winter, I just flip 2 switches. 1 reverses the ceiling fan direction. The other chooses a different pair of 10k NTC thermistor temperature sensors; now comparing the sun-warmed attic temperature with the cooler shop temperature. When the attic is warmer, the fan blows that warm air downward into the room.
My reversible fans are just 2 20″ box fans mounted back-to-back. My damper is a center-pivoted piece of rigid foam pulled by an old shaded-pole microwave fan motor mounted like a winch.
It all works GREAT!! … and it uses very little power.
